Gayle McCaffrey voices for justice

In March 2012, 36-year-old Marjorie “Gayle” McCaffrey vanished from the Charleston, South Carolina home she shared with her husband, Robert McCaffrey.

At first, there were details that made it appear possible Gayle had left on her own. But as investigators looked closer, the story became far more complicated. More than a decade later, Gayle has never been found, and the questions surrounding her disappearance remain deeply unsettling.

Who Is Gayle McCaffrey?

Gayle McCaffrey Smiling

Gayle McCaffrey was 36 years old when she disappeared from Charleston County, South Carolina. She was last seen at her home on Limestone Boulevard in the West Ashley area on March 17, 2012.

She was a mother, a sister, a loved one, and a woman whose family has spent years trying to find out what happened to her.

What Happened to Gayle McCaffrey?

According to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, detectives responded to Gayle’s home after Robert McCaffrey reported that his wife was missing. As the investigation continued, detectives became suspicious of the circumstances surrounding her disappearance. Searches were conducted over time with help from local, state, and federal law enforcement, as well as family, friends, and coworkers.

But Gayle was not found.

The public details of this case include claims about a supposed farewell letter, questions about what happened inside the home, and years of legal developments that still have not resulted in Gayle being located.

This is where the case becomes difficult to summarize in a short post without losing the nuance. There are facts that can be stated clearly, and there are questions that still need answers.

For the full timeline, the letter, the investigation, and the legal history, listen to the full episode of Voices for Justice.

The Legal History in Gayle McCaffrey’s Case

Robert McCaffrey jail

Robert McCaffrey was arrested in 2014 on an obstruction of justice charge based on inconsistencies in a statement he provided to detectives during the investigation into Gayle’s disappearance.

In 2018, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office announced he had been arrested in North Carolina on a fugitive warrant in connection with Gayle’s case, but a grand jury later refused to indict him on a murder charge because of a lack of evidence presented by authorities.

In 2019, Robert McCaffrey was convicted of obstruction of justice in connection with Gayle’s disappearance and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

That conviction matters, but it does not answer the central question.

Where is Gayle McCaffrey?

Why Gayle’s Case Is Getting Renewed Attention

Gayle’s case has received renewed attention because Robert McCaffrey has now been charged in a separate cold case: the 1990 murder of Lisa McBride in New Jersey. Authorities say he faces murder, kidnapping, and burglary charges in Lisa’s case, and that case is still pending.

Lisa's case has been featured on the Voices for Justice Podcast extensively in the past, listen to the latest update episode here.
